Painting Concrete With a Pump Sprayer

Concrete in basements and other places in a residential home can be made more aesthetic using paint. You can paint concrete to create an accent wall or to blend the wall with the rest of the decor. Painting concrete can be made simpler by using a pump sprayer, allowing you to apply a smooth, even coats. You may even to elect to use different color paints to create a visual border, separating and defining two or more areas.

  • Trisodium phosphate, or TSP
  • Bucket
  • Scrub brush
  • Premixed concrete patch
  • Trowel
  • Concrete paint
  • Pump sprayer

Instructions

      Combine one part trisodium phosphate, or TSP, with three parts water in a bucket. Then clean the concrete thoroughly with a scrub brush to remove any dirt.

      Apply premixed concrete patch to any cracks or crevices with a trowel and let dry as long as suggested by the manufacturer.

      Pour concrete paint into a pump sprayer and spray the concrete going from top to bottom, from one side to the other end. Spray in a continual, steady fashion to get a smooth coat of paint. Allow the first coat to dry for at least three hours.

      Apply a second coat of paint to the concrete using the pump sprayer. Spread the paint in the same manner as before to make it appear smooth. Let the second coat dry three to four hours.

      Spread a coat of concrete sealant over the paint with a roller and let dry to finish the job.
