How to Faux Paint a French Door

While French doors enhance any room with the way the light shines through glass panes framed by wood, the doors often consist of plain white wood or metal materials. Change the look of the doors by creating a faux appearance with glaze paint. Begin with a darker base coat of paint and mix the sheen of glaze paint with a lighter color of paint to create a faux finish.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare area around the door. Clean the area of dust and debris. Place drop cloths on the floor beneath the door.

    • 2

Remove the hardware from the door. Place painter's tape along the edges where the glass panes and the wood portions of the door meet.

    • 3

Sand the wood with 200-grit sandpaper to remove surface blemishes. Sanding the wood also helps prepare the surface to bond with the paint. Wipe away the sanding dust with a tack cloth.

    • 4

Paint the wood with a coat of primer. Use a fine bristle paintbrush to apply the primer. Follow the direction of the grain as you paint. Paint the front of the door, the back and, finally, the top, bottom and side edges. Let the primer dry several hours.

    • 5

Apply semi-gloss enamel paint to the door with a paintbrush. Use even strokes in the direction of the grain as you paint. Paint the front of the door first, the back and then the top, bottom and sides. Let the paint dry several hours and apply a second coat. Allow the paint to dry four to six hours.

    • 6

Combine a second gallon of paint with faux glaze in the bucket. Stir with the stirring stick.

    • 7

Dip a paintbrush in the glaze mixture. Blot the brush onto a clean cloth to create a thin consistency.

    • 8

Run the brush gently over the freshly painted surface of the door. Begin at the top left of the front of the door and paint in the direction of the grain. Apply the paint to the back of the door. Allow the glaze to dry at least 24 hours.

    • 9

Remove the painter's tape after the paint dries. Use a utility knife if needed to remove all the tape from the edges of the glass panes.

    • 10

Put the hardware back in place on the door.
