What Do You Prime Metal With Before Spray Painting?

Expose metal to air and rust forms. One way to prevent rust is to paint the metal. Spray painting is a fast way to paint any metal. Prior to painting, apply a coat of primer to prevent the paint from peeling and provide protection against rust. Special products exist that have been formulated to prime metal.
  1. Preparation

    • Prepare the metal for the new coat of paint. First, remove as much of the prior paint job as possible with a wire brush, some type of scrapping instrument and sandpaper. The goal is to rid the metal of as much of the old paint as you can. Clean and thoroughly dry the metal surface.

    Advantages

    • Applying a coat of primer on the metal prior to spray painting has its advantages. One is rust prevention. It provides an additional barrier of protection. In addition, some primers contain ingredients to prevent rust. Primers also hide imperfections in the metal and make the metal surface smoother. Another advantage involves the paint adhering to the primer better than if applied directly to the metal surface.

    Options

    • Make sure that your primer is made to be used on metal. Paint manufacturers offer options for metal primers. For example, a steel garage door needs a primer specifically designed for galvanized steel doors. If you can't locate a primer for your particular metal, select a general metal primer. If the metal item is in a kitchen or bathroom, look for a primer with mildew protection. Apply a full coat for complete protection. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours and inspect prior to spray painting.

    Painting

    • Make sure that you choose a metal paint for spray painting. Look for a metal paint that retards rust. Remember the importance of preparation and primer application. If the primer looks good and smooth, you're ready to spray paint.
