How to Paint a Fireplace With Heat-Resistant Paint

An old brick fireplace can keep a room looking dated and dark, but a fresh coat of paint can lighten the room and add a fresh appearance to the fireplace. A popular choice to resurface the fireplace is to use a heat-resistant paint. Most masonry paints are acceptable choices for fireplace brick. Before applying the paint, you must prime the surface. Then you are free to add the topcoat.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any loose paint, if the fireplace was previously painted, using a paint scraper.

    • 2

Scrub the brick surface with soap and water. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Vacuum away any dust and debris after the brick fireplace is dry.

    • 4

Place painter's tape over any areas around the fireplace that you want to protect from paint.

    • 5

Apply a single coat of oil-based primer to the brick fireplace, using a paint roller with a thick nap that's between 3/4 and 1 inch. Make sure you use primer that is suitable for brick and is heat-resistant. Allow it to dry thoroughly.

    • 6

Apply a heat-resistant, latex paint suitable for masonry surfaces on top of the primer, using a paint roller or a paintbrush.

    • 7

Allow the first coat of paint to dry, and then apply a second coat. Apply a third coat if necessary.
