Painting Over Marker on a Wall

In homes with young children, marker can end up on the wall. Painting over marker stains can be difficult because the chemicals in the ink may stop paint from adhering properly to the wall. Your best bet is to remove as much of the marker stain as possible before repainting. This can be accomplished with a few common household products. Once the marker is removed, the wall is ready for fresh paint.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray hair spray on the marker stain. Dab with paper towels. The marker will begin to come off onto the paper towel. Continue dabbing until you have removed as much marker as possible, using additional hair spray as needed.

    • 2

Clean the wall with a damp sponge. Let the wall dry for a few hours.

    • 3

Cover the floor with a dropcloth and trim the edges and baseboards with painter's tape.

    • 4

Pour primer into a paint tray, then apply a coat of primer using a roller for large areas and a paintbrush for the trim. Let dry overnight.

    • 5

Apply a top coat of paint. Let dry overnight. Repeat if necessary.
