Painting Wood Toilet Seats

A properly painted wooden toilet seat is not only convenient but also decorative. When selecting a nontraditional toilet seat, wood may take the place of plastic. This option offers the opportunity to paint the apparatus to match the surrounding decor. If the decor of the room changes, so can the color of the toilet seat. If you are refinishing a wood toilet seat, first remove any previous paint or finish using a chemical stripper and a coarse-grain sandpaper.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the seat from the toilet if it is attached. Remove the hinges from the seat and set the hardware aside. Take the seat to an area where you can sand and paint conveniently.

    • 2

Sand the toilet seat using 150- to 180-grit sandpaper. Smooth any rough edges. Wipe away any wood dust.

    • 3

Apply paint primer with a sponge. Smoothly apply the primer to the entire toilet seat and allow to dry, following manufacturer's recommendations for drying time.

    • 4

Spray the seat with enamel paint. Coat the entire seat and allow to dry. Apply a second coat.

    • 5

Spray or sponge on a final coat of polymer-based clear coat. This seals and protects the paint.
