The Preparation of a Metal Door for Painting

An attractive entryway with an inviting door will beckon friends and family into your home. The proper preparation and painting of the metal door will give your entryway a pleasing appearance. The extra time and effort it takes to prepare the door will aid in the longevity of its paint job. A complete overhaul of the door and hardware will update the entire appearance of the entrance of your home.
  1. Supplies

    • When updating a metal door, you may have the necessary tools for door removal and paint preparation on hand. You need a hammer, screwdriver, power drill and pliers for door removal. A metal paint scraper, palm sander and razor paint scraper will make the preparation of an older painted door go smoothly. Primer will coat the door prior to application of the paint that you have chosen, but make sure you choose the correct primer for the type of metal of your door.

    Door Removal

    • A metal door painting project should have long-lasting results, and as such, you will need access to the entire door. Remove the hinge pins to release the door from the casement using a hammer, nail and screwdriver. When undertaking the project, be prepared to spend a few hours refurbishing the surface of the door. Remove the kick plate, old weatherstripping and hardware from the door panel to check for unseen damage underneath. Clean all surfaces and edges of the door to remove grime buildup and loose paint.

    Rust

    • Scrape away any peeling paint or rust spots with a metal paint scraper and razor-edge scraper. Paint, rust and dirt may be causing damage under the hinges, kick plate and door knob unit. An orbital palm sander is an asset to create a smooth surface when there is rust buildup on the door.

    Primer

    • Ron Joseph of Paints and Coatings Resource Center advises that an aluminum door requires special care, including the use of acid etch wash primer to ensure that paint will adhere to the surface. The product is available from industrial paint suppliers. Apply the acid etch to any bare aluminum that you have exposed when removing rust and old paint. Primer paint is best applied in thin layers to get a smooth surface on any metal door.
