How to Get Rid of Latex Paint on a Heater Register

The usual casualties after an unprofessional painting job are the heat register and the wall fixtures. In many cases, the painter adds another layer of paint to the register rather than taping it off appropriately or removing it. If you have been the victim of this shoddy workmanship and would like to remove latex paint from your metal register, the vinegar method may be perfect for you.

Things You'll Need

  • Old roasting pan
  • White vinegar
  • Stiff bristled brush

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the heat register from the vent. Set aside the screws.

    • 2

Heat water and vinegar in old roasting pan until simmering. Remove from the pan from the heat. Insert the metal register and let it soak in the hot vinegar. The latex paint will soften and start bubbling.

    • 3

When the solution is cool enough for you to put your hands in, scrub the register vigorously with a stiff bristled brush. Repeat the process as necessary to remove stubborn patches.
