Set a tarp under the wall that you are repainting. Remove the covers from any electrical sockets or light switches, using a screwdriver, and set them aside.
Wash the wall with soapy water and a sponge to remove any dirt and debris. Let it dry.
Sand the semigloss paint with 120-grit sandpaper until its shine is gone. You can use a sanding block, but do not use an electric sander, as it will be more difficult to control. Removing the outer shine layer will help the new primer to adhere.
Wipe the wall with a tack cloth to remove the sanding dust.
Fill any holes or cracks with wall spackle. Scrape it smooth with a putty knife, then allow it to dry.
Resand the repaired areas until they are smooth, with no texture variations as you run your fingers along the wall.
Apply blue painter's tape along the edges of the wall to protect areas that you do not want painted, such as window trim and crown molding.
Apply a coat of primer to the wall with a brush or roller, then allow it to dry for 24 hours. Skip this step if you are repainting with the same color.
Apply two coats of new semigloss paint with a paintbrush or roller, allowing the first to dry before adding the second. Applying two thin coats prevents the drips that can occur with a single thick one. Allow the paint to dry for another 24 hours.
Remove the painter's tape and tarp, and replace the covers on the sockets and switches.
