Repairing Scraped Paint on Walls

Scratched or scuffed paint can happen at any time, and can absolutely wreck the aesthetic appeal of a room if the damage done is too great. Generally, scratches will extend not only to the paint, but also to the wall board beneath the paint. You will first have to repair the crack or scratch in the wall before you can repair the paint problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Sand the scratched area lightly with 100-grit sandpaper. This will further scratch the paint, but do not worry. It will also smooth the area down and prepare it for the patch needed for the wall scratch.

    • 2

Use your putty knife to apply spackling paste to the scratch. Make it as flush with the surrounding wall as possible during the application.

    • 3

Wait for the paste to dry, then sand the area again to smooth it out in preparation for painting.

    • 4

Clean away any sanding dust that might have gotten on the wall.

    • 5

Apply a coat of paint to the scratched area. Feather the paint out at the edges so that it blends in with the existing paint.

    • 6

Wait for the paint to dry, then apply more coats as necessary until the area is of uniform appearance with the rest of the wall.
