Check for any sources of moisture that may be causing the cracking paint. Sweating or leaking pipes and excess condensation can collect behind the paint and cause it to crack. Repair any leaks and install moisture vents and exhaust fans where necessary (check the manufacturer's instructions for installation) to create a drier environment and prevent future damage.
Use the paint scraper to scrape away loose paint from cracking areas. If not removed, the old paint will ruin your new paint finish. Gently swipe the scraper across the surface until all loose paint is removed.
Sand any uneven areas to remove old stains and smooth the surface. For heavily damaged areas, use drywall compound to repair them then sand the surface to make it smooth. Sanding is important for achieving a smooth area. Paint spreads more evenly over a flat surface.
Wipe the surface with a damp cloth to remove sanding dust. If contaminants, such as dirt and dust, are on the surface when you apply your new paint, you risk the paint not adhering properly. Contaminants block the paint from sticking to the painting area. Wait for the area to completely dry before continuing.
Tape off any areas you do not want painted. Painter's tape is easy to apply and leaves to no tape residue behind. Use the tape to protect trim pieces, ceilings, cabinets and any other area you are not painting.
Prime the area to seal any porous areas. Primer also gives the painting area a smooth surface for your new paint finish. Wait for the primer to completely dry before apply your new paint.
Use a high quality paint brush and roller to apply your paint. Low quality painting tools tend to fall apart easily and do not offer the even paint strokes like high quality ones do. High-quality, high-gloss paints are also necessary for painting bathrooms. A high-gloss finish is durable and resistant to moisture making it a suitable choice for bathrooms, since they are high traffic and very moist areas. Apply the paint, working one section of the room at a time, in an up and down motion, similar to a "W" shape. Use the paint roller for large areas and employ the brush to get into corners. Wait for the paint to dry before applying another coat.
