How to Paint Hydrostatic Concrete

Many in-ground pools are made of concrete. When you drain your pool you run the risk of hydrostatic pressure -- the pressure of the water in the ground surrounding the pool shell -- damaging the concrete walls. This is avoided so it is resistant to hydrostatic damage. Treating the concrete in such a way, however, means you can only use certain types of paints on the concrete. That being said, there are ways to paint hydrostatic concrete the color of your choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Drain your pool if you are planning to paint the concrete in and around the pool.

    • 2

Use your paint scraper to scrape a piece of the existing paint (if there is any) off the surface of the concrete. Take it to a paint dealer to determine what kind of paint it is so you can continue with the same type of paint. There are three different paints designed for use with concrete such as this: epoxy, rubber-based and water-based acrylic. Epoxy is the longest-lasting.

    • 3

Place your paint in a tray.

    • 4

Paint the surface of the concrete using a 3/8-inch nap roller. In a pool, start in the deeper end and work you way to the shallow end.

    • 5

Wait two to four hours before applying a second coat of paint. Repeat until you are satisfied with the color.

    • 6

Wait five to seven days before refilling your pool.
