How to Make Your Own Concrete Dye With Acetone

If you have a concrete floor in your home and can't figure out how to make it look modern and aesthetically pleasing, changing the color with concrete dye may be the answer. Concrete dye can be used to update the look of an old floor or to completely and dramatically change the look of your floor. Dying concrete is a very cost-effective alternative to other flooring options and can be accomplished without the need to hire a contractor. In order to make a concrete dye, you will need to mix the powder dye with acetone before it is ready to use.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the color you wish to dye your floor or concrete surface. Concrete dye can be found in a wide array of colors. If the color you want is not available, you can mix existing colors to produce your desired color.

    • 2

Purchase the amount of powder dye you will need. Check the coverage area indicated on the dye to determine how much you will need to complete your job. Coverage rates will vary by manufacturer. Be sure to factor in how intense you wish the color to be. Dying generally requires two applications but for a more intense color change you may need additional applications. Concrete dye may be available at a local hardware store; however, a wider variety of color choices may be available though an online manufacturer.

Purchase an equal amount of acetone. For example, if you purchase one gallon of dye then you will need one gallon of acetone as well. Acetone is generally available from a local hardware store.

    • 4

Pour the dye directly into the acetone container. Shake the container for 30 seconds to mix the dye with the acetone. Repeat the process if additional dye is needed.

    • 5

Set the container aside for approximately 30 minutes to allow it to settle before use. Shake, or re-mix, the mixture often while applying the dye to keep the dye well mixed.
