How to Repaint a Bed Frame

Repainting a bed frame to match the room colors could be the start of a bedroom makeover. Metal frames generally last for years, but the frame might need cleaning and painting if the metal has rusted and the paint has chipped. A wooden bed frame might be structurally sound, but a dull finish gives the appearance of aging. A fresh coat of paint to match the bedroom decor perks up the room and hides imperfections.

Instructions

  1. Metal Frame

    • 1

Set up an outdoor work area. Use a protective cover if working on a deck or driveway. Place sawhorses or blocks in the work space to raise the frame to a comfortable work height.

    • 2

Disassemble the frame with the appropriate tools, and carry the pieces to the work area. Some frames are connected with screws, while others are held with nuts and bolts. Place the hardware into a plastic zipper bag for safekeeping.

    • 3

Wash the frame with mild detergent and water. Dampen a cleaning cloth to remove surface dirt. Select a scrubbing sponge for more difficult areas. Dry the frame with a clean cloth.

    • 4

Examine the frame for signs of rust. Remove rust with a wire brush or abrasive cleaning pad.

    • 5

Sand the surface with medium-grit sandpaper to blend in uneven areas. Wipe off the dust.

    • 6

Apply a rust-resistant primer to the frame using a paintbrush. Home improvement centers have primers specifically designed for metal.

    • 7

Apply the final coat of paint with spray paint designed for metal. Select from a variety of colors from a home improvement center.

    • 8

Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer's directions. Turn the frame to the unpainted side and finish spray painting all the unpainted areas.

    • 9

Carry the frame pieces inside after they have dried. Reassemble the frame in the bedroom.

    Wood Frame

    • 10

Place a protective cover on the floor in a large work space.

    • 11

Disassemble the wood frame using the appropriate tools. Some frames are connected with screws, while other are held with nuts and bolts. Place the hardware in a plastic zipper bag for safekeeping.

    • 12

Clean the frame with mild detergent, warm water and a cleaning cloth. Dry the wood immediately using a dry cloth.

    • 13

Sand the wood with medium-grit sandpaper and wipe off the dust. Sanding roughens the surface and allows the paint to adhere better.

    • 14

Paint the wood with primer using a paintbrush. Allow the primer to dry according to the manufacturer's directions.

    • 15

Apply the final coat of paint using a paintbrush. Examine the dried finish to determine whether a second coat of paint is needed.
