Dry the ceiling area thoroughly after repairing the leak with a hair dryer or other drying equipment. If the drywall ceiling is not damaged beyond repair, you will be able to paint over the area without removing water-soaked areas.
Scrape off peeled paint and damaged textured material to reveal the drywall surface.
Clean the ceiling surface with a mixture of 1/3 cup of laundry detergent, one quart of liquid chlorine bleach and three quarts of water. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and spray onto the affected area. This mixture will turn black mold white, according to the OnTheHouse website. You can rinse the area with plain water. Dry the ceiling area thoroughly.
Apply a waterproof primer paint such as Kilz or other brand with a brush or roller. This type of primer will help to seal out any remaining dampness that remains in the ceiling area. Allow the primer to dry overnight.
Re-texture the ceiling area with an aerosol texturing compound. Allow the compound to dry as recommended on the label.
Apply a matching ceiling paint carefully over the primed area with a brush or roller. Ensure that the entire area is adequately covered. Let the paint dry overnight before running the shower or bath water to allow the paint to adhere properly to the surface.
