How to Repaint a Grill Primer

Throughout the year, grills rust, accumulate grime from cooking, and get dirty from outdoor elements. As part of the grill's restoration process, people clean their grill and repaint their grill's primer. Grill primer helps corrosion resistance, seals the surface of the grill, and improves the grill's color. The best time to repaint your grill is anytime that you have dry weather and low humidity, which are conditions that best help dry the primer. Primer can be bought at gardening or outdoor cooking supply stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Spray the grill with a hose to remove grime and build up. Mix together 2 tbsp. of an non-abrasive liquid soap in a one-gallon bucket filled with water.

    • 2

Dip steel wool into the soapy mixture. Scrub the grill to remove chipped paint pieces. Clean the inside, grates and outside of the grill with the soapy mixture.

    • 3

Move the grill to direct sunlight or wait three to four hours for the grill to completely dry.

    • 4

Tape over areas of the grill that you do not want to prime, such as the handles or wheels.

    • 5

Stand two feet away from the grill. Shake up the primer. Spray the outside of the grill with the primer. Coat the areas in one to three light coats rather than applying one thick coat. Wait three to four hours for the primer to dry.

    • 6

Open up the grill. Apply primer to any bare areas. Keep the lid open to help the primer dry.
