Let the grates cool completely before removing them.
Sand the entire surface of each grate with medium-grit sandpaper. Work until you’ve removed all of the paint chips or cracks. Sand until you work down to the base of the metal.
Spray the grates with an all-purpose cleaner and wipe the sawdust residue and the cleaner off with a paper towel.
Let the grates sit until they are completely dry. Lay them over a drop cloth.
Shake the stove paint can vigorously, hold it 12 inches from the grates and spray the paint directly on the grate. Move the can as you are spraying so you apply only a thin but even layer of paint.
Let the grates dry completely according to the paint manufacturer’s instructions.
Flip the grates around and apply paint to the other side using the same process. Let the paint dry completely.
Apply a second coat of paint, letting the grates dry before you turn them over the spray the other side.
