DIY High Temp Coating

Although there are many different types of high temperature coatings for commercial and industrial users, do-it-yourselfers can create their own versions of high temperature coatings for a much more modest price by adding over-the-counter additives to commonly available water-based paints or finishes. Those additives will only be effective, however, if they are evenly dispersed throughout the coating. DIYers can approximate the effect of a vortex-style professional paint mixer using commonly available power tools and attachments.

Things You'll Need

  • Water-based coating
  • High-temp additive
  • Drop cloth
  • Five-gallon bucket
  • Paint-stirring paddle
  • Variable-speed electric drill
  • Paint-mixer drill bit
  • Safety glasses

Instructions

    • 1

Spread out a small drop cloth under a clean, empty five-gallon bucket to catch any spills or spatter that might occur in your mixing area. Attach the paint-stirring drill bit to your variable-speed drill.

    • 2

Pour up to four gallons of latex paint into the five-gallon bucket, then immediately pour the contents of the additive package into the bucket. Gently stir the materials together with the stirring paddle.

    • 3

Insert the paint mixer bit into the paint and activate the drill at slow speed. Adjust the speed upward until a vortex is visible in the liquid, but not so fast that it causes the coating to be expelled from the bucket. Gradually move the mixer up, down and around the bucket for at least one minute until the additive is thoroughly blended into the paint.
