How to Remove Paint on Wood Subfloors to Install Laminate

There’s a lot to be said for starting a project with a clean slate. If you’re determined to remove paint from your wood subflooring before installing new laminate flooring, you may have to try progressively more aggressive tactics to successfully remove all traces of the paint. But never fear: The paint you seek to remove is probably latex, which means it is water-based – not oil-based – and should lift off with some elbow grease and perseverance.

Things You'll Need

  • Scraper (metal or plastic) or putty knife
  • Old toothbrush, bristle brush or steel wool
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Lemon juice
  • Old rag
  • Safety goggles
  • Latex gloves
  • Commercial-grade paint remover
  • Hand-held sander

Instructions

    • 1

Lift as much as the paint as you can from the floor with a scraper or putty knife. Since you are installing laminate over the top, you may not care if you make some gouges in the wood. But if so, use a plastic instead of a metal scraper.

    • 2

Scrub the paint with an old toothbrush, a bristle brush or steel wool. Repeated and light, circular motions ought to gradually lift the paint stain.

    • 3

Mix a solution of 1 cup rubbing alcohol and ½ cup lemon juice. Saturate a rag with the solution and rub the paint with it. For more stubborn paint stains, pour some of the solution on the wood floor and rub it with an old toothbrush.

    • 4

Soak a cloth with full-strength rubbing alcohol and rub away at the paint.

    • 5

Put on safety goggles and latex gloves and apply some commercial-grade paint remover. Rub the paint until it is gone.

    • 6

Sand the paint with a hand-held sander, which will give you more leverage than a stand-up floor sander.

Sometimes, latex paint will come clean with a flick of a fingernail.

Clean the subfloor with warm, sudsy water and let it dry thoroughly.
