Painting is tough work, especially when you cannot reach the surface that you are covering such as ceilings. Painters, however, regularly use a paint stick, which extends the length of the roller to be able to paint hard-to-reach ceilings. Using a paint stick takes a few moments to get used to, but at the end of the job, you will consider it your best painting tool.
Prepare the room to be painted by placing drop cloths down and taping off the edges of the ceiling and walls.
Prepare yourself for painting by putting on old clothes and eye protection because painting a ceiling usually means paint falling into your face. Also, wear a hat so you don't get paint in your hair.
Attach the stick to your roller. It usually twists on the roller. Without paint on the roller, make sure that you can comfortably reach the ceiling with your feet completely on the floor.
Roll the roller back and forth on the ceiling without any paint on the roller. One of your hands should be a couple of feet above the other hand on the stick with the bottom hand about 6 inches from the end of the stick. Move your hands in the opposite direction so the roller moves smoothly back and forth against the ceiling surface.
Paint the edge of the ceiling with a paintbrush while standing on a ladder. Make a 3-foot border around the ceiling with the paint. This allows you not to concern yourself with the edges of the ceiling.
Put your paint in a roller tray and dip your roller into the tray. Roll it on the ridged part of the tray to get the excess paint off the roller.
Paint the ceiling in diagonal, zig-zag strokes. Paint the surface again with long, straight strokes so the surface is even with paint.
