A basement stone wall may become unsightly with stains and water damage, requiring a layer of paint to seal the surface and prevent further leaking. Because the basement wall surface is below ground level, choose a paint specifically formulated for below-grade use. With proper preparation and the correct paint product, you can paint your basement stone wall to restore its appearance and keep it waterproof.
Wash the stone wall prior to painting to remove mold and mildew. Mix 3 parts water and 1 part chlorine bleach in the bucket. Wash the surface of the stone with the bleach solution and rinse thoroughly with water. Allow the wall to dry thoroughly.
Remove efflorescence from the stone wall, if necessary. Efflorescence appears as crystallized white salts that dry on the stone surface. Mix 4 parts water and 1 part muriatic acid in the bucket and scrub the stone surface with a wire brush to remove the crystals. Mix 1 1/4 gallons of water and 1/4 pound of baking soda in the bucket and apply this neutralizing liquid to the stone wall after the muriatic acid. Rinse the wall and allow it to dry thoroughly.
Cover the floor with the dropcloth.
Stir the paint well with the paint stick. Load the paintbrush and apply the paint in a thin, even layer over the stone wall. Dab the brush bristles into the crevices of the wall carefully to ensure complete coverage. Paint the entire wall and allow the first coat to dry for about three hours.
Apply a second coat of paint using the same technique as for the first coat. Allow the second coat to dry at least six hours before touching the wall.
