Can Paint Be Applied Over Wood Filler Grout?

Wood filler grout, also known as wood putty, is a soft, pastelike substance that fills holes, cracks and gouges in wood trim, furniture, paneling and other wood structures. The substance accepts latex, enamel and other types of paint as well as stain. Wood filler grout dries quickly and doesn’t require a catalyst when mixing and applying the substance to wood surfaces.

  1. Sanding

    • Use a piece of 220-grit or higher sandpaper to sand any holes, cracks, gouges and other areas you filled with wood filler grout. Sand the areas immediately after the wood filler is dry, and continue sanding until the area is completely smooth. Sanding prepares the area for primer. Failing to sand the wood filler grout results in ridges and other imperfections showing through any primer and paint you apply to the wood filler grout and surrounding areas.

    Cleaning

    • Wipe the areas containing wood filler grout, as well as surrounding areas, thoroughly with a soft cloth or rag to remove any sand dust and debris. Run your fingers over the areas -- the areas should be smooth and debris-free. If the areas are not smooth, use a new piece of 220-grit or higher sandpaper to sand the areas again. Wipe the sanded areas again to remove any debris.

    Applying Primer

    • Use a paint roller or paintbrush to apply one coat of primer designed for wood surfaces. Primer ensures the proper adhesion of paint as well as provides a sealing layer to any areas containing wood filler grout. The substance also covers any stains on the wood and fills any small cracks, holes and problem areas the wood may have.

    Purchasing

    • Wood filler grout, sandpaper and primer are available from a variety of manufacturers at area hardware, home improvement and retail superstores. The supplies are also available from lumber and online hardware stores and outlets. Purchase extra sandpaper, and use a new piece whenever the paper becomes smooth or soiled.
