What Color Paint Trim to Use With Gray Walls

Trim in reference to interior decorating is a term that can apply to floor and ceiling moldings, door frames and windows. Some people when painting in a neutral color such as gray may opt for a colorful accent in their room by applying different colors to the trim. Since gray matches with most colors, you have many combinations of colors available.

  1. Coordinate

    • Decorate around the existing decor of your room. Assuming the gray color is matching with the existing furniture, pick a color from your living room curtains, sofa or other furniture pieces to use as the trim color. Coordinate the colors in your room and incorporate one of the room's colors as as your trim color. Extracting a color from your area rug can go nicely as an accent to the walls as well.     Whites

    • There isn't just one shade of white. It's the most extensive color on the color chart. It can be slightly tinted many ways to provide a subtle tweak in attitude for your trim instead of pure white. Although for dark gray walls, white is a great trim color because it will make the room appear bigger and really complement that dark charcoal gray on your walls. Off-whites with a slight tint toward the color of your living room furniture is another option.

    Dark Colors

    • For wall with a light gray color, a dark accent to the trim might be what your room really needs. A dark plum colored trim will go nicely with a light gray wall. Add a colorful area rug with hints of a dark purple to complement the trim. A gray-blue such as a cadet blue can be a more subtle approach for a darker trim on a light wall. The darker trim against a dark gray wall will make the room appear smaller.
