How to Paint a Cabinet Chocolate Brown

Painting a cabinet is a simple process as long as you do all the proper preparatory work. Cabinets, whether they are wood or laminate must be cleaned and have a roughened surface so the primer and paint will stick to the cabinet. Using an oil-based paint and primer will ensure the most durable finish. The primer will also help cover the previous finish if it is darker than the chocolate brown paint you have selected.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Bucket
  • Mild soap
  • Sponge
  • Towel
  • Lint-free cloth
  • Liquid deglosser
  • Paint tray
  • Oil-based primer
  • 4-inch paintbrush
  • Oil-based chocolate brown paint

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cabinet's doors. Remove the hinges, handles or any other hardware with a screwdriver. Set the hardware aside.

    • 2

Fill a bucket with warm water and a mild household soap. Wipe the cabinet and the cabinet door with the soapy water using a sponge. Rinse the sponge and wipe the cabinet again to rinse. Dry it with a clean towel.

    • 3

Saturate a lint-free cloth with a liquid deglosser. Wipe down the cabinet and the cabinet door with the deglosser; let it dry according to the package directions.

    • 4

Pour an oil-based primer into a paint tray. Use a 4-inch paint brush to apply one coat of the primer to the cabinet, starting at the top of the cabinet and working down. Use even, overlapping strokes.

    • 5

Paint the cabinet door with the primer. If the door has a trim or a bevel design, start in the middle of the door and work out to the edge. If not, start at the top of the door and work to the bottom.

    • 6

Let the primer dry according to the package directions. While it dries, rinse out the paintbrush and paint tray and let them air dry.

    • 7

Apply the first coat of an oil-based chocolate brown paint to the cabinets and door, using the same painting technique you used to apply the primer. Let the paint dry and apply a second coat for a darker chocolate brown finish.

    • 8

Let the second coat dry 48 hours. Re-install the hinges and hardware and reattach the door.
