How to Fix Alligator Scales in Paint

If you notice cracks on painted surfaces that resemble the hide of an alligator, this situation demands attention. Although alligator hide on footwear or handbags can fetch a hefty price, wooden surfaces with the same look are an indication that the paint is failing. Restore surfaces with a scaly look by sanding away old paint and repainting them.

Things You'll Need

  • Drop cloth
  • Paint scraper
  • Sandpaper (100 grit and 220 grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Latex primer (exterior or interior)
  • Flat paintbrush (3 inch or 4 inch)
  • Latex paint (exterior or interior)

Instructions

    • 1

Cover the area beneath the surface with the drop cloth to contain chipped paint and to minimize paint mess.

    • 2

Position the blade of the paint scraper onto the painted surface at the edge of the area where you see alligatoring. Push the blade firmly across the surface to remove the cracked paint. Continue scraping away the paint until you remove it from the surface entirely.

    • 3

Sand the surface first with the 100-grit sandpaper to remove any remaining chipping or flaking paint. After using the coarser sandpaper, switch to the 220-grit sandpaper and sand until the surface feels smooth. Wipe the sanded surface with the tack cloth.

    • 4

Apply the latex primer to the surface with the flat paintbrush. The primer will seal the wood and provide a strong basecoat for the paint. Cover the surface evenly with the primer and allow it to dry for the time recommended by the manufacturer.

    • 5

Apply the latex paint over the primer, using the same application technique. Allow the paint to dry for the recommended time and then apply a second coat of paint.
