Steel is a durable surface that can tolerate any type of solvent, including acetone, for the removal of paint; however, acetone may dull some shiny finishes, so test the chemical on a discreet area first. Acetone, which is a main ingredient in several solvents, such as lacquer thinner and fingernail polish remover, is an effective paint remover. If the acetone-based product is not effective in removing all the paint, you may need to use paint remover instead or scrub the steel with steel wool to remove the paint.
Wear gloves when working with acetone. Also, open a window, open the door and turn on a fan, if possible, to improve ventilation.
Wet a rag with an acetone-based product. The rag should be damp, not dripping.
Rub the steel with the rag in the direction of the grain. Repeat as necessary to remove as much of the paint off as possible.
