How to Make Porch Paint Nonslip

When a plain wood porch gets wet from rain or snow, it becomes slick, even if it's painted or stained. A slippery porch is a disaster waiting to happen. To limit the possibility of falls, apply to the wood paint that has texture added. You can add texture to any paint just by mixing it with sand. The sand gives the painted porch a gritty texture, creating more traction and minimizing the risks of a slip.

Things You'll Need

  • Garden hose
  • Mildew stain remover
  • Exterior wood primer
  • Paint tray
  • Paint roller
  • Exterior porch and patio floor paint
  • Play sand
  • Wooden mixing stick
  • Paintbrush

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse off the porch's surface, with water from a garden hose, to remove any dirt and debris. Wait approximately 24 hours for the porch to fully dry. Clean all mildew stains off the porch floor with a mildew stain remover.

    • 2

Pour some exterior wood primer into a painter's tray. Paint the primer over the porch's floor using a paint roller. Allow the primer to dry for one to two hours.

    • 3

Remove the cover from a gallon of exterior porch and patio floor paint and pour it into a 5-gallon bucket. Pour 1 pound of play sand into the 5-gallon bucket with the paint. Stir the sand and paint mixture well with a wooden mixing stick.

    • 4

Pour some textured paint into a paint tray. Roll a paint roller through the paint and apply it to the porch's floor. Wait approximately one hour for the first coat of paint to dry.

    • 5

Apply a second coat of the textured paint over the first coat on the porch's surface, using a paint roller. Wait for at least 24 hours before you begin walking on the porch.
