How To Paint Copper Gutters

Painting metal surfaces has the reputation of being difficult and producing poor results. Like most painting projects, the crucial step in painting metal surfaces is preparation. If the surface you are painting is properly cleaned and primed, the paint will adhere better and be much more durable over time. Copper gutters are a great example of a surface that must be properly prepared before painting.

Instructions

    • 1

Rent a paint sprayer. If you want professional-looking results you need to use professional tools. Any rental center will have sprayers available. Ask the sales clerk to give you a demonstration before you take the equipment home.

    • 2

Remove any loose paint and rust with a scraper. Loose paint particles left on the surface of the gutters will be magnified if you put fresh paint over the top. Wear protective eyewear while scraping loose paint to avoid getting paint particles in your eyes.

    • 3

Wash the gutters using a large sponge, water and dishwashing liquid. Scrub the gutters really well to properly prepare the surface. Rinse off the suds with clean water. Allow the gutters to dry completely.

    • 4

Protect the rest of your home from paint spray by carefully covering it with plastic sheeting and tape.

    • 5

Prime the gutters. Use a oil based metal primer. Sherwin Williams makes one that they call Adhesion Primer that works well. Using the sprayer, apply two thin coats of primer, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next. Clean out the paint sprayer. Allow the sprayer to dry completely.

Fill the paint sprayer with outdoor acrylic paint. Choose a paint formulated for metal surfaces. Spray paint onto the gutters using a steady back and forth motion. Slightly overlap each pass of the sprayer to ensure even coverage. Allow the first coat of paint to dry and apply a second coat.
