Remove the metal hand rails from the exterior of the house using an electric screwdriver and the appropriate bit. Save the hardware for re-installation after you have finished painting.
Scrub away any rust with a wire brush. After the majority of the rust has been removed, use a medium grit sanding sponge to rough up the rest of the paint and remove any remaining rust.
Clean the metal railing carefully with a tack cloth to remove any paint or rust residue. Move the railing to a location where it is protected from the wind. Place newspaper underneath and around the railing to protect the surrounding area from paint. Use painter's tape to hold the newspaper in place.
Coat the railing with a thin layer of rust-resistant metal primer. Look for primer that is available in a spray can for the best finish possible. Be sure to apply the primer lightly to prevent drips. Don't be afraid to allow one side to dry in order to move the rail and paint the other side. Let the railing dry before proceeding.
Apply a second coat of the spray primer. Wait for the railing to dry before continuing.
Coat the railing with a rust-resistant metal enamel paint. The paint should be sold in a spray can. Apply two coats, allowing for drying time between the first and second coat. Let dry after the second coat.
Reinstall the railing with an electric screwdriver. Examine each piece of hardware before you reuse it and replace any screws or bolts that look worn.
