How to Find Exterior Home Colors

When you are painting the exterior of the home, finding the ideal and most suitable colors may be tricky. Visiting a paint or home improvement store can be overwhelming, since there are so many colors to choose, especially if you need multiple colors for trim, accent and wall paint. Spend a couple of weeks thinking about the kind of exterior home color you might want, and how it would suit the home. Exterior paint color is designed to enhance the look of your house, add to the curb appeal and improve the value of the home.

Think about the colors that would suit your home's style. If you have a historic home, research colors that were used when the home was built to re-create a historical look. Visit your local historical society and ask them for information on original home colors, especially if you have a Victorian-style home.

Check out colors in the neighborhood. While you don't want to copy someone else's color exactly, you can find inspiration for your own exterior home color especially since they may have the same home architecture as you. Even if you want to be unique with your exterior color, try not to choose multiple colors or loud paint shades that will not fit in with the neighborhood.

Find exterior home colors that enhance your landscaping. Choosing a color that works as an accent to a colorful flower garden may look appealing. Look to your surroundings to decide what color palette to go with. If you live in a coastal area, colors like blue, green and coral may look ideal, while if you live in a forest or mountainous region, forest green, brown and other earthy colors may look best.

Choose a paint color that does not clash with the roofing materials. Don't match the colors, but try to find a shade that blends or contrasts well with asphalt or wood shingles and tile.

Decide on a paint color that will enhance the home. Exterior paint can make a small house look large and a large house look small. If you want to create the illusion of a larger home, choose a lighter exterior paint color. Dark wall colors will make the home look small, but work well as an accent trim color in recessed roofing areas to draw the eye upward.
