DIY Wood Ovens

A wood-fired oven is a customary cooking device that often conjures visions of the countryside and rustic-inspired cooking. Nothing can replicate the tastes that a wood-fired oven produces. Fortunately, building one yourself is not a very complicated process and can be accomplished with basic materials that you can easily acquire. Properly put together your oven and enjoy a variety of foods baked to perfection.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay down the wood pallet in the outdoor space where you want to position the oven. Be sure to place it on a level surface that is free of any encroaching vegetation.

    • 2

Stack the red bricks in a single layer on top of the wood surface until it is covered.

    • 3

Moisten the batch of sand so that it is easily molded by hand. Do not over-wet the sand so that it is runny and no longer amenable to molding.

    • 4

Form the sand into a symmetrical hemisphere shape on top of the brick layer. This sand structure will act as the support for the clay. Build the sand hemisphere as large as you would like the oven to be.

    • 5

Wet the newspaper sheets and double-layer them over the sand structure.

    • 6

Mold the clay over the newspaper layer in a uniform width of 3 inches. Carefully mold together the individual pieces of clay so that there are no visible seams. Let the clay air-dry for three hours before continuing the project.

    • 7

Make an arched hole in the side of the clay, using the utility knife. Plan the cut so that the top of the arched opening reaches two-thirds of the way up the hemisphere.

    • 8

Reach into the opening and pull out both the sand and newspaper. Once the sand and newspaper are clear, allow the oven to dry for one week before lighting the wood fire within.
