Outside House Paint Colors

White

• White is the most popular exterior house color, according to the Yellow Pages and Majon International. White goes with any accenting colors, its clean and vibrant and makes the home highly visible.

Gray

• Gray is the second most popular color, but Majon International recommends choosing paler shades. Lighter grays make the house seem more spacious and brighter than darker tones as well as more inviting.

Blue

• Shades of blue are the third most popular choice for painting the exterior of homes, according to the Yellow Pages. A variety of blue tones are attractive, according to the website, and easily complement other favorite house colors--like white.

Tan and Brown

• Brown and tan colors follow blue in popularity, and, according to House-Painting-Info, light and medium browns fade slower and are more resistant to ultraviolet damage than most other colors. They also tend to cover very well, so fewer coats are needed than for lighter colors.

Yellow and Green

• Yellows and greens are less common than whites, grays, blues and browns. Yellows, along with reds, also tend to require more coats to cover the exterior well (up to six), which can make it an expensive option. Greens are favorites to create historical looks.

Beige

• Beige is a yellowish, creamy color and is about as popular as green or yellow. Unlike green or yellow, however, a quality paint offers the benefits of browns and tans--better than average coverage and resistant to ultraviolet damage.

Accent Colors

• If using a bright accent color, Majon International recommends limiting it to the shutters and front door instead of applying it to all of the trim. Bright colors are overwhelming, but a splash of blue or red on the front door, for instance, is inviting to guests or potential buyers.
