How to Paint Hardiplank Siding

Hardiplank is a cement fiber board siding manufactured by James Hardie Siding Products. The siding is a durable and long lasting material that can be ordered pre-finished or ready to paint. Painting the siding yourself means that you completely control the color. Even Hardiplank that was ordered with a factory applied paint finish will need a new coat eventually. There is no need to hire an expert to paint your siding. You can give your house a fresh and clean coat of color over a long weekend.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn on your garden hose and rinse the Hardiplank siding to remove loose dirt and debris. Mix trisodium phosphate and water according to the package directions. Dip a scrub brush into the solution and scrub the siding to remove dirt. Rinse with clean water. Let the siding dry in the sun.

    • 2

Cover any windows, doors and trim with plastic sheeting and low tack painter's tape. Apply the tape to the windows and then cut the tape with a utility knife to create a sharp line between the window and the siding.

    • 3

Remove loose and flaking paint with a metal scraper. Hold the scraper at arm's length from your body and pull the scraper toward you to remove the paint.

    • 4

Attach medium-grit sandpaper to an electric sander. Sand any areas of the siding that are uneven or have a large area of chipped, flaking paint. Sand the siding until it is smooth.

    • 5

Set out tarps to protect the sidewalks and patios from paint splatter. Stir good-quality exterior paint to thoroughly mix it. If you are painting a large area, mix several cans of paint together to prevent color variations.

    • 6

Paint the trim and the small crevices of the siding with a trim brush. Work on one wall at a time.

    • 7

Roll a short-nap paint roller through the paint and apply it to the siding in a thin, even coat. Allow the first coat to dry.

    • 8

Apply a second coat of paint. For new, pre-primed siding, James Hardie Siding Products recommends one coat of paint. For previously painted siding, you may need a second coat for complete coverage.
