The requirements of a sandblasting system are usually specified in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. The nozzle usually defines the required amount of air. When buying an air compressor, plan for future higher capacity requirements. Twice the air capacity of your present requirements is a good rule of thumb. However, as an alternative to a larger capacity compressor, you can add a second compressor at a later time.
A sandblasting system is based around a gun or a wand. The two devices are similar, but differ in size. A sandblasting gun is more compact. It is easier to control when sandblasting objects low to the ground. For cleaning purposes, some guns attach to a wand. The wand extends the reach, making it easier to clean materials higher up or farther away.
Nozzles fit into the gun or wand and may be specific to a particular brand of gun or wand. The nozzle defines the spread and force of the sand being sprayed at an object. The more air the nozzle requires, the more abrasive can be moved toward the target area.
Sandblasting items like car parts to remove rust is best done using a sandblasting cabinet. The cabinet seals most of the air and abrasives inside. Some cabinets offer holes with protective gloves. This allows an operator to maneuver the object being cleaned and the sandblasting gun without opening the cabinet. When sandblasting an outdoor area, like the side of a building, be sure to wear a respirator, eye protection and any other manufacturer-recommended protective equipment.
