What Kind of Paint Should I Use on Exterior Windows & Facial Boards?

A high quality, durable exterior paint will last up to eight years if applied correctly, according to ICI Paints. Strong timber paints are more resilient to outdoor conditions than decking oils so are preferable for windows and facial boards. Paints that adhere to the surface of the wood as a hard layer, barrier or coating, rather than absorbing into the wood, are stronger than oil-based types of paint, so are preferable.
  1. Apply an Undercoat Paint First

    • A good weather-resistant undercoat provides lasting protection for exterior woodwork when combined with a durable topcoat. Some modern paints, such as Dulux Trade Weathershield Flexible Undercoat, flex with the wood as it changes shape and expands or contracts in different conditions, such as summer and winter temperatures.

Use an Acrylic Paint for Quality

    • This is an expensive but highly effective category of water-based exterior paints. The color is maintained for longer than other types of paint and the surface, when dry, is resistant to peeling, blemish-formation, corrosion, and, because of its inherent elasticity, naturally-occurring temperature changes.

Use a Latex Paint for Low Cost

    • Latex, water-based paints are the most common exterior paints because of their relatively low cost, odorless application, ease of cleaning and quick drying times. Take care not to apply in temperatures below 50 degrees F as latex paints are sensitive to the cold.

Use Water-based Paints if Time Is Important

    • Water-based paint dries quicker than oil-based paint, so it may be more suitable for outdoor use on windows, particularly in cold conditions, during winter or when it may rain.

Apply Alkyd Paints for Durability and Resistance to Staining

    • Although oil-based, alkyd paints are useful in certain conditions and for certain applications, such as when staining may be a concern. The paint does have its drawbacks, however. It has a strong odor, degrades in ultraviolet light and dries slowly.

Try Milk Paint as an Environmentally Friendly Choice

    • Milk paint is hard wearing, durable and lasts longer than many other paints. Using milk in paint is a traditional method of preserving wood, furniture and china, and the paint works well. It is best applied to raw wood and unpainted facial boards. Only 1 qt. of milk paint covers 70 square feet of wood, according to The Real Milk Paint Company.

    Choose an Attractive Color Gloss

    • Exterior gloss paints add color and extra protection to exterior windows. Fit the color to your home, depending on what you already have on other doors, windows and garages or sheds. Sandex, Leyland and Dulux are examples of companies that offer good quality gloss paints with a depth of color. Swatchbox offers a virtual exterior paint tool that can help decide which color you wish to use if you cannot decide immediately.
