How to Paint a Mobile Home in Vintage Colors

Well-maintained vintage mobile homes have a retro charm. Reflecting the trend for homes to become ever larger in size, larger modern mobile homes are sometimes almost indistinguishable from "stick built" homes There's no shortage of vintage paint color schemes available to you, whether you want to spruce up an older mobile home, or add some charm to your newer model. Your choice of colors might be limited by the type of siding on the home -- darker colors may not work as well on aluminum or vinyl siding.

Consider the type of siding when choosing colors. Aluminum siding can get very hot when painted dark colors, and dark-colored paint can warp vinyl siding. Don't choose paint colors that are any darker in shade than the original vinyl.

Research the original colors for your mobile home, or ones like it. Many aluminum mobile homes were unpainted except for a single stripe. Common vintage colors for mobile homes included light green, white, teal and pink.

Test prospective colors by painting samples directly onto your mobile home before purchasing all the paint. It can be difficult to predict how colors will look simply by looking at the little color swatches.

Use two coats of 100-percent acrylic exterior paint no matter what type of siding you have. It will last longer than latex or vinyl paint when applied to a properly prepared, primed surface.
