How to Seal Mahogany Porches

Porches constructed of hardwood, such as mahogany, add value and beauty to a home. However, if not properly cared for, the wood can become damaged and begin to decay. You can protect your mahogany porches by applying a wood stain every one to three years, depending on the climate in your area. To determine whether it is time to re-stain your mahogany porch, drop a few drops of water onto the surface. If the water puddles, it is not necessary to re-seal the wood; however, if the wood absorbs the water, you should reseal it with stain.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the porch and surrounding area by removing all furniture and covering any shrubbery around the porch. Examine the individual mahogany boards and sand any rough spots. Finally, thoroughly sweep the porch to remove any dust, dirt and debris.

    • 2

Apply the wood stripper to all of the mahogany surfaces, using a sprayer, and allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. Mist the porch with a garden hose if the stripper begins to dry.

    • 3

Rinse the wood stripper off the porch using a garden hose or a pressure washer on a low setting.

    • 4

Mix the wood brightener with water, according to the manufacturer's instructions, then apply it to the porch using a sprayer. Allow the brightener to sit for a minimum of 15 minutes, and mist the porch with a garden hose if the stripper begins to dry.

    • 5

Scrub any heavily soiled or moldy areas using a scrub brush, then rinse the porch using the garden hose or a pressure washer on the medium power setting.

    • 6

Allow the porch to dry for at least 48 hours.

    • 7

Cover any areas that may come in contact with the wood stain using painter's plastic.

    • 8

Open the can of stain and stir thoroughly. Mix multiple containers in a 5-gallon bucket if necessary. This will ensure color consistency.

    • 9

Start to apply the stain on one end of the porch, covering two to three boards at a time with a paint roller. Apply it lightly, as a second coat will be applied after the stain has dried. Use a paintbrush to cover tight areas unable to be reached with a roller.

    • 10

Reapply a second coat of stain to all wood areas to complete the sealing of your mahogany porch.
