How to Remove Rust Stains From Wood Siding

Rust stains on wood siding causes unsightly lines and spots that break up the flow of the natural wood grain. Removing these stains is a challenge. Rust tends to stick to porous surfaces like porcelain and wood, so chemical agents designed to break down the stain are necessary. There are several on the market but the main thing to look for is the chemical compound oxalic acid, which comes in a crystal form. The compound is commonly called wood bleach and is available at paint stores or pharmacies.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on chemical gloves and goggles to reduce the chance of irritation from the oxalic acid solution.

    • 2

Add warm water to a bucket. Mix oxalic crystals into the water until the crystals no longer dissolve into the water. You will see some of the crystals at the bottom of the bucket when the water is fully saturated.

    • 3

Apply the solution to the stained wood and rub the stain vigorously with a brush. Thoroughly rinse away the solution with clear water to remove all of the oxalic acid from the wood. Otherwise, the acid may alter the color of the wood siding.
