Powder Paint Removal

Powder paint, or powder coating, is used on small objects, such as fishing lures, as well as motorcycles and other larger objects that have both metal and plastic components. As the name indicates, the paint comes in powdered form, and is applied by heating the object that you want to paint and dipping it into the powder, or with a powder paint gun that liquefies the paint for spraying. While many standard paint removers do not work on powder paint, there is a standard product that can help with powder paint removal.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase gasket remover. Gasket remover, which is sold at many automotive stores, comes in an aerosol spray can. Get the strongest gasket remover available, which is generally labeled "Industrial strength."

    • 2

Move the object from which you want to remove the powder paint to a location with plenty of ventilation. An outdoor location is best, but, if one is not available, move the object to a garage with the door open or open all of the windows in the room in which you plan to work.

    • 3

Put on protective clothing. Wear a thick long-sleeve shirt and long pants, as well as work goggles, gloves and a face mask.

    • 4

Cover any part of the object on which you do want to remove the paint. Tear thick paper grocery bags to the size that you need to cover the area and tape it to the object on which you will be removing the powder paint with masking tape. Make sure to cover all areas that you do not want to get the gasket remover on.

    • 5

Spray gasket remover directly onto the object where you want to remove the paint. Allow the gasket remover to sit on the object for approximately 15 minutes and the powder paint begins to peel off of the object. Wipe the paint from it with a clean, dry rag.

    • 6

Recoat any areas that still have powder paint on them with the gasket remover and allow the paint to bubble. Then, wipe the area with the rag. Throw the rag away when finished.
