How to Paint Metal Siding for Homes

Metal siding is a relatively low-maintenance material often used on the side of homes. It can, however, become faded or scratched over time. Instead of investing the time and money to replace the siding entirely, homeowners should consider repainting the material. While the process can be time consuming, depending on the size of a home, it will add curb appeal and ultimately value.

  Clean the siding thoroughly to ensure good paint adhesion. Use a mild detergent, such as TSP, applied with a scrub brush. Buff parts of the siding that are not smooth with steel wool. Rinse the siding and let it dry.

  Fill all holes and openings with caulk. Use a flexible caulk that will not break when and if the siding shifts. Pay special attention to seams that are leak-prone, such as those around windows.

  Apply a primer designed for outdoor use on metal surfaces. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before applying your paint color. When in doubt, let the instructions on the product's label guide how long you allow for drying time.

  Apply a latex paint as the top coat, brushing horizontally. Use a 4, 5 or 6-inch brush. When painting edges or the edges of panels, use a brush with angled bristles. If applying multiple coats, allow each coat to dry completely before adding the next coat.
