How to Use Heavy Metal Primer

Heavy metals, such as steel, lead and cast iron, are commonly used in the construction of outdoor buildings and machinery. These structures are often permanently exposed to the elements. To avoid rust, corrosion or paint peeling, metal items such as garage doors, boat hulls and window casings need to be primed before painted with outdoor or latex paints. Priming metal will ensure a long lasting finish is achieved.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the metal that is going to be primed. Fill a bucket with warm, soapy water and clean with a sponge. Rinse with clean water and allow to dry.

    • 2

Thin the metal primer, if necessary, in a metal bucket, using water--not to exceed 4 oz per gallon of primer. Not all primers require thinning, so check the manufacturer's instructions.

    • 3

Apply the primer to the metal, using a brush. Stir the primer well before application.

    • 4

Leave primer to dry for 2 hours before applying a second coat. Outdoor or latex paint can be applied once the second coat of metal primer is completely dry.
