How to Caulk Over Metal & Formica

A metal or Formica surface can seem quite challenging to work with, especially when it comes to waterproofing the surface while maintaining an attractive finish. Metal and Formica both provide a solid surface with seams at corners, along walls, and where two sections meet. In order to waterproof the openings between the walls and joining areas, apply a clear, silicone caulking. This is a task virtually any person can complete in a short amount of time.

Things You'll Need

  • Caulking gun
  • Clear silicone caulk
  • Rubber gloves
  • Utility knife
  • Formica cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the surface thoroughly with a heavy duty cleaning product. For Formica and metal surfaces, choose a bleach-free, industrial cleaner. Apply the cleaner and scrub the surface with a rag. Remove all liquid from the surface.

    • 2

Cut the tip off the tube of clear silicone caulking with a utility knife, and load the tube into the caulking gun.

    • 3

Apply a thin line of caulking directly into the seams along the Formica or metal surface. Avoid applying excessive caulking, as a thin line is sufficient enough for cracks up to 1/8 inch thick.

    • 4

Put on rubber gloves and remove excess caulk from the seams using your index finger. Smooth the caulking over the seams and wipe caulking off your finger using a paper towel. Avoid pressing too hard over the caulking, as it will cause the caulk to rise above the seams and remain only on the surface.

Dampen an old rag and wipe along the seams. A damp rag will remove excess caulking from the surface, leaving the seam filled and the surface clean. Allow caulking to dry for 24 hours before placing anything on the surface.
