Cool House Color Ideas

Most house exteriors are painted to not make a bold statement. Neutral color schemes are common as are brighter colors muted with a gray or tan undertone. If you want your house to appear more memorable and more "cool," choose color schemes that are eye-catching and bright. If you are looking to make such a drastic change, give yourself a few weeks to mull over the look. Before you make any changes to your house's exterior, ensure that the colors you select aren't against any neighborhood ordinances.
  1. Rainbow Colors

    • If the sky is the limit for you and you have no neighborhood ordinances to adhere to, paint the boards of your exterior siding in a rainbow of stripes from the bottom to the top of the house. Even if you have bricks, you can do the same thing by painting the rows in different colors. Choose a single trim color for the windows to tie it all together.

    Victorian Doll House

    • For a house that is of the highly ornamented Victorian era or that has architectural details recalling that era, unusual colors can highlight the details, making the house stand out from others. You can get away with combining many colors if you keep them in the same family. For example, combine pastel pink, blue, green and purple on the same house to accent different details, or choose brighter colors, but keep them all relatively similar, such as pinks and purples, or blues and greens.

    Mural

    • If you have a brick siding, either commission a mural or paint one one yourself. You can paint the entire house to look like an extension of the landscape around it, as though a house isn't there at all, or give each side of the house a different mural. Alternatively, whitewash the whole house and paint murals on sections of the walls as though bricks have been removed in different places to reveal the house inside.

    Patterns

    • When you don't want to overwhelm the eyes of onlookers with a multitude of colors, choose only a couple of colors, such as shades of green or simple black and white, and employ them in interesting and unexpected ways. Paint on a plaid pattern or an animal print if you are daring enough. Abstact line art designs, too, can be very appealing.
