How to Repaint T111 Plywood Types of Siding

T1-11 and other plywood siding panels are an economical way to side a home or outbuilding, however, repainting the siding can be an involved project. The surface must be scraped and brushed with a wire brush, primed and repainted. T1-11 has a rough texture and grooves to appear similar to rustic board and batten style siding. This makes it decorative but more labor intensive to paint. You can roll on the paint and go back over the rolled areas and paint the recessed areas of the wood siding. It is important to maintain the finish on plywood siding because water will damage any exposed plywood surfaces.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape the entire surface of the T1-11 siding that you plan to repaint. Once all of the large pieces of paint have been scraped off, brush the surface with a wire brush to remove any loose pieces from the recessed areas of the wood where the scraper couldn't reach. Brush in the same direction as the wood grain.

Cut off the tip of the caulk tube with the built-in cutter on the caulk gun. Insert the tube tip first into the gun. Caulk around the outside edges of windows and doors. Smooth out the caulk lines with the tip of a finger.

Pour primer into a roller pan. Roll on an even coat of primer with a paint roller, working your way from the top of the siding down until the entire surface is primed. Go back over the siding with a paintbrush and fill in any recessed areas where the roller didn't prime. Allow the primer to dry at least four hours.

Add top coat paint into a roller pan and apply paint to a roller. Roll on an even coat of top coat over the primed siding surface. Touch up areas missed by the roller with a paintbrush. Allow the first coat to dry for at least four hours and apply a second coat of paint.
