Choose a color for the chain. You can paint the chain a color that coordinates with other items or to cover scratches and rust stains. If the chain is very rusty, consider choosing a darker color to help hide the deep red of the rust stains.
Buy enough cans of metal-binding spray paint to entirely coat the chain. Look for paints that work to guard against rust and other types of deposits.
Place a canvas drop cloth or tarp on the grass or other outdoor area to allow the paint fumes to dissipate in the open air and to ensure that excess paint doesn't get on indoor surfaces or furnishings.
Apply safety goggles and a paint mask
Put on a pair of work gloves or latex or rubber gloves.
Sand the chain to remove any loose rust prior to painting.
Shake the can of spray paint well. Hold the can upright and spray smoothly over the chain, away from your body or any surrounding objects. Apply smooth strokes when painting the chain and make sure each link is entirely covered.
Hang the chain from a hook or nail or suspend it from the ends to allow it to dry for several hours. Hang the chain in an area where it is protected from rain or other moisture while it's drying and ensure that the chain is not touching any other surfaces.
Cover any spots you missed with a second coat of paint. Repeat the drying process.
