How to Stucco Over Foam

A stuccoed surface gives a house a Mediterranean look and has been a traditional house siding for hundreds of years. Synthetic stucco, developed in the 1950s, is an energy-efficient way to achieve the look, keeping a house cool in the summer and warm in the winter, especially when used over foam insulation.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a layer of base, such as a dry blend of Portland cement and polymer-modified adhesive, at least 1/16 inch thick. Be sure to choose a base that is approved for use over foam.

    • 2

Embed the fiberglass mesh into the base coat while it is still wet, using a dull trowel.

    • 3

Wait at least 24 hours for the base dry, before applying the stucco coat.

    • 4

Mix the Portand Cement stucco, according to the manufacturer's instructions, for the square footage you need to cover. Stucco should be applied in mild weather between 50° and 70° F.

Apply the stucco over the base coat and mesh with a trowel. Allow the stucco to dry between layers to achieve the textured finish you desire.
