How to Make Paint Thick for Painting Cement

Adding a fresh coat of paint to cement creates a clean and decorative look to the surface that would otherwise appear gray and drab. Cement has a rough-textured appearance that requires a thicker paint to create the desired effect and achieve proper adhesion. A paint thickener called hydroxyethyl cellulose mixes with everyday latex paint to create a product that sticks well to cement and achieves a long-lasting, durable finished product.

Instructions

    • 1

Protect the work area with drop cloths.

    • 2

Pour latex paint in the color of your choice into a bucket approximately 30 percent larger than the original paint can.

    • 3

Stir a small amount of hydroxyethyl cellulose into the bucket with the paint. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to determine the amount you should add, as different manufacturers will call for different amounts. Stir the paint mixture with a paint stick until the contents are well blended.

Test the consistency of the paint. Apply a small patch of paint to a inconspicuous area of the cement. Check for thickness and consistency. The paint should not drip down the wall but hold fast to the cement, bonding well.
