The Least Expensive Options to Renovate a Front Porch

The front porch can be more than a portico; it can be a place for relaxation. Architecturally, it's intended to add useable living space to the exterior, sometimes to relieve some of the spatial limitations of the interior.
  1. Whitewash

    • Whitewash is the cheapest way to give the front porch a new face. Buy good white paint and add water. Use a ratio of two parts paint and one part water. Paint the front porch in the late spring or summer while humidity is low. Paint the floor of the porch also. Add longevity to floor paint with a satin finish or oil-based paint.

    Door Color

    • Take a look at the door's color from the street. Think of the door as the home's initial announcement of who and what is inside. Escape the boredom of the traditional brown door. Consider the interior color palette and choose a color from the palette that has a high saturation value. Replace the old door hinges and doorknob with new brass findings. Order a brass knocker from an iron smith. Use a motif that's repeated inside the home or a monogram of the family name. Paint the exterior window frames the same new color as the door.

    Old Window Screens

    • The entrance of a home always has a subliminal forlorn message if it has torn screens and broken window lights. Remove every torn screen, even if the budget doesn't permit the installation of new ones. Install new glass lights to replace those that are broken or cracked. This change alone conveys better feelings to anyone entering the house.

    Sensible Accessories

    • Accessorize the front porch with items that can be installed without being susceptible to thievery. The front porch swing installed from the ceiling is a cheap option. Rattan chairs to match that can be moved into the interior foyer each evening are also inexpensive. Use citron candles on metal bases of staggered height to keep away mosquitoes and other vermin. Select large heavy stone or terra cotta pots with brambly plants, such as the rose or blackberry bush. The weight of the pots and the thorns from the plant discourage people from stealing these mobile accessories.
