How to Apply Wolman DuraStain Solid With an HVLP Sprayer

Wolman DuraStain is a solid color, acrylic water-based stain for exterior wood such as decks, fencing and siding. It is formulated to prevent water damage and mildew and includes UV protectants for color stability and to minimize sun graying. High volume low pressure paint sprayers utilize high air volume to atomize the paint before it reaches the nozzle. A separate low-pressure air outlet propels the paint out of the nozzle in a fine mist. HVLP sprayers produce little overspray and are particularly suited for applying thin substances such as stains and sealers. Wolman endorses HVLP sprayers for DuraStain and advises consulting the sprayer manufacturer's instructions for application.

Instructions

  1. Surface Preparation

    • 1

Strip previously coated or stained surfaces down to bare wood using a commercial paint stripper or stain and finish remover.

    • 2

Scrape or sand away any remaining flaking or peeled areas after the stripped wood is dry using a paint scraper or sandpaper.

    • 3

Clean unpainted wood that has been exposed to weather to remove dirt, mildew, mold and other contaminants. Use a commercial wood cleaner appropriate to the type of wood.

    • 4

Treat uncoated new wood with a commercial wood cleaning product to remove surface wax and "mill glaze" and open up the pores of the wood.

    • 5

Sprinkle a small amount of water on the wood after surface preparation. If the water is quickly absorbed, the wood is ready for coating with DuraStain.

    Spray Application

    • 6

Mix the can of DuraStain thoroughly. Apply DuraStain undiluted.

    • 7

Remove the sprayer cup. Pour DuraStain into the cup through a paint filter cone to remove impurities that might clog the small orifices in the HVLP sprayer. Reinstall the sprayer cup on the sprayer.

    • 8

Select a sprayer nozzle with a spray pattern appropriate to the surface.

    • 9

Adjust the material flow control on the sprayer to deliver a coverage rate of 150 to 250 square feet per gallon for rough wood or 250 to 350 square feet for smooth wood.

    • 10

Hold the HPLV spray gun perpendicular to the surface and one to 12 inches from the surface according to the spray pattern desired. Keep your wrist straight and spray in parallel motion to the surface at a consistent speed. Trigger the spray gun after you begin the spraying motion for each pass and release the trigger before ending the spraying motion.

    • 11

Use a paintbrush to back-brush along the grain and remove any runs, drips or uneven coverage that occur during spraying.

    • 12

Stain the ends and sides of the boards on horizontal surfaces such as fences for protection against moisture absorption.

    • 13

Allow a minimum of four to six hours before applying a second coat. Always apply a second coat of DuraStain.

    • 14

Wait 24 hours after the second coat before using stained furniture and 72 hours before dragging furniture or other objects across stained decks or floors.
