How to Repair the Hayward Phantom

Keeping a pool’s water clean requires much more maintenance than appropriating the correct dosage of chlorine or salt on a regular basis. The amount of leaves, pine needles, and unfortunate insects can leave any net-only pool cleaner feeling constantly frustrated and defeated while battling this constant influx of unwanted debris. Thankfully, the Hayward Phantom pool cleaner provides pool owners with a much less labor intensive option. This pool cleaner works to remove unwanted debris on a regular basis, seeking out the debris and sucking it up. However, as with any machinery, the Hayward Phantom is not without occasional malfunctioning issues.

Instructions

    • 1

Repair a cleaner that will not spin out. As with many other Hayward Phantom issues, problems with the cleaner spinning out indicate that the pressure of the system may be off. Use the pressure-testing fitting to check the pressure, and make appropriate adjustments so that the pressure is around 27 psi. If this does not solve the problem, check the front and rear spin hoses to make sure that they are connected; if they are not, reconnecting them should fix the issue.

Repair a cleaner that will not move. After making sure the pressure is set to about 27 psi, check the plumbing lines to see if they are blocked. If so, clearing the debris should allow the cleaner to move again. If this does not fix the problem, inspect all the hose lines for possible leaks; if found, replace and/or repair damaged hoses.

Repair tangled rigid pipes. The easiest way to fix this problem is to make sure that the floats are carefully centered on the flexible hose section closest to the cleaning head. However, if this does not solve the issue, then inspect the skim jet holes to see if any of them are clogged. If unclogging the holes still does not change the performance of your Hayward Phantom, there is a possibility that the hose is at an incorrect length for your pool; use the measuring tape included with the cleaner to adjust the hose to the appropriate length for the size of the pool.

Repair a cleaner that will not go to the top or bottom when selected. To do this repair, again, make sure the pressure is set to the suggested 27 psi. Next, check to see if the gearbox’s selector switch is connected to the external slide switch. If the problem persists, inspect the top/bottom piston in the manifold for any damages; if the piston is stuck, then freeing it should solve the problem.
